An air rifle is a weapon which uses a column of compressed air or other gas to propel a projectile. Most air rifles are relatively low powered weapons, but high powered air guns have been used in both hunting and military applications. The explorers Lewis and Clark reportedly carried a large bore air rifle with them on their journey across the United States.
Air rifles are generally of much lower power than firearms, but can achieve extremely high levels of accuracy. The air rifles used in Olympic 15 meter competition are probably the most accurate arms in the world.
