Ashley, a professor of political science in the University of Kansas, is offered ambassadorship by the President of United States. She rejects the offer just because she feels that she's more happy as she is. Moreover, her husband doesn't want her to be an ambassador; however, he is murdered, and to avoid the loneliness Ashley accepts the President's offer. She is assigned to be an ambassador for Romania, behind the Iron Curtain, where she finds everybody is conspiring against her.
