Wick

A wick is a cord or strand of loosely woven, twisted, or braided fibers, such as in a candle or oil lamp. It draws up a steady supply of fuel to the flame by capillary action.

"But true it is, that when the oil is spent The light goes out, and wick is thrown away." (Edmund Spenser)

Wick is a royal burgh in Caithness, in the far north of Scotland. It was originally a Viking settlement, which was expanded as a herring fishery in the early nineteenth century to house crofters cleared from their lands.

The town lies on the east coast. It has a small airport, a railway station and a heritage centre.
