Victor Davis Hanson

Victor Davis Hanson is a classicist and grape farmer known both as a scholar of ancient warfare, a commentator on modern warfare, and a critic of social trends related to farming and agrarianism. He received his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz (1975) and his Ph.D. from Stanford University (1980), and is currently professor at California State University, Fresno, where he began teaching in 1984 when he started the classics program there.

He is a member of the Democratic party but holds conservative views on many issues. He is a contributor to National Review and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. He cites the Theban general and statesman Epaminondas as one of his heroes. Like neoconservatives, Hanson has strongly hawkish, pro-Israel views on the Middle East, and is thus often quoted on warblogs such as Little Green Footballs.
