Sherwood number

The Sherwood number (Sh) is a dimensionless number used in mass-transfer operation. It represents the ratio of lengthscale to the diffusive boundary layer thickness.

It is defined as follows

<math> Sh = \frac{K_c L}{\mathcal{D}} <math>

It is the mass-transfer equivalent of the Nusselt number where

• <math>K_c<math> = overall mass transfer coefficient;
• <math>L<math> = characteristic length;
• <math>\mathcal{D}<math> = component diffusion coefficient
