Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.
The mission began when 5 US Special Forces soldiers are recruited by the CIA to rescue the cabinet minister of Guatemala and also to find and rescue Special Forces soldiers held captive by guerillas forces operating deep in the jungles of this country, well before the guerillas kill the hostages for espionage. Soon after they roped out of the chopper, the soldiers began looking for traces of other units and the cabinet minister, instead they find a disassembled crashed chopper, and some of them, argued that this helicopter appeared to be a "reconnaissance bird" rather than a regular military chopper. Later on the mission, they also discovered three dead US soldiers hanging from trees, all of them mutilated horribly, possibly killed by the Predator. The search and rescue mission continued, and they soon discovered the guerrilla post and the hostages being held there. When a Russian military advisor killed the last hostage, the major of the Special Forces platoon ordered all soldiers to rally with him and to make the strike move. The firefight began, with all guerilla men killed and a female prisoner in their hands. They later send a call for the choppers to come back and pick them up. When their command refused to pick them in the guerilla camp, they had to find out how to make it and cross the border of the country without being detected by suspected guerilla men inside the jungle that awaits them. The Predator went to the guerilla camp silently and took a view around. Later on, one of Schaefer's soldiers suspects there is something moving in the trees but he can't see what it is.
The girl escaped, and the creature followed her while at the same time the soldier was trying to catch her. The long run soon finished, the alien killed the soldier by severing his neck artery, the Predator picked up the body and blended into the palm tree leaves. The team arrived, only to find the girl with her face covered in blood. There was a large blood trace that lead back to the team's position from the palm trees but there was no body found. Intead, they argued a lot about the soldiers whereabouts, accusing the girl of killing him. The girl told them that the jungle took the soldier away, but no one believed it. They already know that whoever killed the soldier did not take his weapon or communications gear. They search the area for about 50 meters without no signs of the soldier's body. The creature hung the body not far away from the team's location. While the search continued, the Predator was already stalking another soldier and soon fired a blood filled object on him only to be followed by a laser shot who blow open the chest of Blain. While collapsing to death, Mac heard and explosion and rushed back to Blain's position. The Predator was near the body when Mac arrived, he then pointed his weapon at the creature and unloaded an entire bandolier of ammo with his M-60 Machine gun and wound the creature on the left leg. When all the soldiers heard the shooting, they also began to shoot, wasting nearly all the ammunition in their arsenal.
They mounted a defensive position with claymore mines, flares and trip wires.
The predator went nearby and pulled out a survival kit and began healing his wounded leg. When it ripped out the bullet encrustated in his leg, the creature let out a ferocious scream that was heard by the girl and one Indian soldier in the team. The Predator attacked once again in the night by destroying the defense position. The creature went and stole the body of Blain. Early on the afternoon, the soldiers once again mounted a defensive position, this time by preparing a net in an attempt to capture the "killer". The creature fell into the trap and broke free by firing a laser. Another laser destroyed a branch that swung down and injured a soldier gravely.
The predator escaped once more and later went on a killing rampage that finished all of Schaefer's men with the exception of Major Schaefer and the prisoner girl.
Schaefer escaped the creature and fell off a cliff into a huge river, he then swam down the current. Just upon arrival at the river banks, he rested a little bit and soon heard a splash. The creature was still looking for him. He dragged onto the mud and remained still for a while. The Predator removed the electric cracks around his body by manipulating a wrist computer and searched for Schaefer, the alien spotted a small heat signature inside a log and turn on a triangular crosshair that activated his shoulder mounted laser cannon.
A small mammal ran off the destroyed log and the Predator looked around for his lost prey.
Schaefer waited until the creature went far out of his sight and began preparing weapons. After nightfall, Schaefer's sent a war cry that was heard by the creature. The fighting began with a cat and mouse search that ended with Schaefer being wounded and the Predator activating a self-destruct device that left a large amount of jungle burned. The rescue team arrived and pulled Schaefer out of the jungle.
The alien hunter (Kevin Peter Hall) is equipped with an impressive line of weapons including a shoulder mounted laser cannon, metal armor, wrist computer system, survival kit, wrist mounted double edged blade, cutting tools, and a cloaking device that bends light rays and turn the creature almost invisible.
An interesting fact about Predator is that three of the movie's stars went on to become gubernatorial candidates, two of whom won.
There is also a series of comics, computer games, and a movie that connects Predator with the Alien series, called Alien vs. Predator.
