Maryborough, Queensland



         


Maryborough is situated on the Mary River in South East Queensland, Australia. Maryborough was proclaimed a city in 1905 and as at 2004 has a population of approximately 26,000 persons. It is located just off the Bruce Highway, 300 kilometres north of the state capital, Brisbane.

Maryborough is the self styled Heritage City of Queensland, and holds heritage markets each Thursday. The city has preserved a large number of 19th and 20th century buildings.

The main industrial strength of the city is comprised of Walkers Limited, a heavy engineering business, which has built much of the rolling stock and locomotives for Queensland Rail.

Birthplace of P.L.Travers, author of Mary Poppins books. Her father managed a bank in the building where she was born. This is in the centre of town, still in use but no longer as a bank.
