Mary Cheney

Mary Cheney (born 1968) is the daughter of Dick Cheney, the Vice President of the United States, and his wife, Lynne Cheney. As of 2004, Cheney is director of vice presidential operations for the Bush-Cheney 2004 Presidential re-election campaign.

Pro-gay rights campaigners have vociferously criticized Cheney, a lesbian, for supporting her father's campaign for re-election despite the George W. Bush administration's opposition to same-sex marriage. Cheney herself has made no comment about whether she approves of gay marriage during the 2004 campaign. Several public campaigns have been instituted to pressure her for this stance; one, dearmary.com (an open letter calling on her to step down), is the top Google hit for her name, the result of a Googlebombing.

In 2000 the Cheney family had insisted that Mary was a private citizen and off-limits to the press. Even so, her presence seemed to bolster the compassionate conservative image that the Republican ticket wanted to convey to voters.

After her father became Vice-Presidential candidate, Mary Cheney joined the gay-friendly Coors Brewing Company, responsible for marketing to gay and lesbian consumers.
