Note on Pen Names
As far as possible in the list below, the thakhallus, or nome de plume, is in italics. The thakhallus can be a part of of a poet's given name or something else adopted as an identity. And the traditional convention in identifying Urdu poets is to mention the thakhallus at the end of the name. Thus, for example, the person whose official name and title was Mirza Asadullah (Beg) Khan is usually referred to as Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib, or just Mirza Ghalib. An interesting sidebar to this is that some poets end up having a part of their name repeated; thus, Faiz Ahmad Faiz.
