Leggings are a style of tight-fitting trousers that are usually made of some blend of spandex such as lycra, cotton, nylon, and polyester. Leggings may also simply be the leg portion of trousers, covering the ankles to the knees or thighs[1] (http://www.bartleby.com/61/71/L0107100.html).

The most common blend in leggings is 95% cotton and 5% spandex. One manufacturer produces leggings in a blend of 85% cotton and 15% spandex. Leggings made of cotton and spandex only are more likely to be worn for fashion than would leggings made of nylon and spandex. During the 1990's it was common to see females wearing a nice sweater or blouse with leggings. Some of these leggings were printed with prints such as flowers (referred to as floral leggings), gingham, paisley, or others. Most leggings during the 1990's were solid with black and gray being the most common colors.

Leggings made of nylon and spandex are more likely to be worn for excercizing than for fashion. Even though many of this kind of leggings have nice striped patterns on them they are typically designed with a sports look to them and thus not looking good with a nice dress sweater.

Even though the vast majority of those who wear leggings are female some men wear them as well. Most of the time men that wear leggings wear them when they exercise. A select minority of men wear leggings with casual sweaters or other tops to make them look nice. Generally speaking, it has typically been accepted that leggings are more suitable for females than they are for males.
