Lake Burley Griffin

Lake Burley Griffin is a large body of water in the centre of the Australian federal capital city of Canberra, and was created in 1963 after the Molonglo River which runs through the city centre was dammed by Scrivener Dam.

The lake varies in depth from less than 2 metres at the eastern end, to approximately 25 metres at the dam wall. It consists of three basins: east, central, and west. Burley Griffin's original plans called for nearly circular basins, but the eventual form is more organic and irregular.

Lake Burley Griffin is crossed by Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, Kings Avenue Bridge and a roadway over Scrivener Dam.

The lake was named after Canberra's designer, Walter Burley Griffin.
