German Sixth Army
The German Sixth Army was the protagonist of the tragic Battle of Stalingrad during World War II.
This army begun its perfomance in Russian Campaign under the leadership of General Walter von Reichenau, being the spearhead of the German south front attack. After the death of Von Richeneau in dark circumstances, his successor was General Friedrich Paulus. Despite the the grey antecedents of Paulus as a commanded, he managed to obtained with the Sixth Army the major victory in Kharkov during the spring of 1942. But this victory sealed the army's destiny because the OKW designated it for the attack to Stalingrad. The Sixth Army failed to obtain a quick victory. The winter came and with it Operation Uranus -- the massive attack of Soviet forces to the flanks of the German corridor between the Don and Volga rivers. The Sixth Army was isolated and the attempts at rescue were useless (Operation Winter Storm). Finally after countless sufferings, the Sixth Army was destroyed. All its men were dead or prisoners of war.
