Gediminas was the son of Pukuveras Liutauras, duke of Lithuania. Gediminas became grand duke of Lithuania in 1316 and died in 1341. He was first successful Lithuanian ruler which was able to extend teritory of Grand Duchy of Lithuania by usign mostly diplomatic means.
After his death Lithuania was left for his five sons to rule, while Jaunutis ruled Vilnius and was formely grand duke of Lithuania.
