Domitien Ndayizeye (b. May 2, 1953) is the president of Burundi. He, a Hutu, succeeded Pierre Buyoya, a Tutsi, on April 30, 2003, after serving as his vice president for 18 months.
Under his regime Ndayizeye has tried to bridge the gap between the hutu and the minority Tutsi people of Burundi through cooperation with other presidents in the region such as Museveni of Uganda and Mkapa of Tanzania.
The recent attack on Congolese Tutsi refugees at the border of Burundi was a real test for the president. But he promised swift retariation and that the culprits would be uprehended by law.
However all in all the peace in Burundi rests in the hands of the international community, especially now that the suspcion of each other that was made worse by the killing of the country's first democratically elected president, melchoir Ndadaye by what the Hutu and the whole world saw as unrealistic Tutsi heade by the once president, Pierre buyoyandayizeye needs the support of the whole international community to make sure that the country does not fall into the gruesome genocide that was in their neighbours courtyard.
