The Commonwealth of the Philippines was a United States insular area holding the status of commonwealth formed in 1935. The United States had been in possession of the Philippine Islands since 1898. The first president of the Commonwealth was Manuel L. Quezon
The commonwealth was conquered by the Japanese on June 9, 1942, during World War II. After World War II, the United States recognized the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of the Philippines on July 4, 1946.
