City Island is a small island 1 1/2 miles long by a half mile wide located in the Borough of the Bronx in New York City, New York.
It is located in Long Island Sound and is south of Pelham Bay and east of Eastchester Bay and west of City Island Harbor and adjacent to nearby Westchester County, New York.
It has been compared to Martha's Vinyard or Nantucket in Massachusetts and the Jersey Shore in New Jersey.
City Island has a population of about 4500.
It is famous for its seafood dining (Johnny's Reef Restaurant, Seafood City, Lobster Box, Tito Puente's, Sammy's Fish Box, The Crab Shanty, Tony's Pier Restaurant) and big charter boats for fishing, though the boating industry there is fading as boatyards are being sold and being turned into condominiums.
City Island is often used for making movies and TV series and now has the nickname of "Cinema Island". Films such as Long Days Journey into Night, starring Katherine Hepburn, Awakenings with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, and Love Is All There Is starring Lainie Kazan and Angelina Jolie were shot there, as well as a television series called Coronet Blue. An episode called Sound Bodies for the television show Law & Order: Criminal Intent was also filmed there recently.
