Cab

  1. Short for cabriolet, a light, horse-drawn carriage which replaced the heavier hackney carriage in the 19th century as the vehicle for hire of choice in Paris and London, and were the forerunners of modern taxicabs.
  2. Short for taxicab, which replaced cabriolets at the beginning of the 20th century, and whose name comes from taxi(meter) + cab(riolet).
  3. The compartment in a railway locomotive from which the engine driver (engineer) controls the locomotive.
  4. The driver's compartment in a truck (lorry).
  5. The compartment in a crane that houses the crane operator.
  6. The moving passenger compartment in an elevator (lift).
  7. Short for cabochon, a gemstone cut with a flat bottom and a rounded top.
