Autonomous Republics

Autonomous Republics are consituent units within the Russian Federation as they were within its predecessor, the former Soviet Union. They are generally comprised of enclaves with a majority of non-Russian ethnicity and named after such ethnicity, such as the "Tatar Autonomous Republic". The level of actual autonomy granted such enclaves varies but is generally quite limited and the parliamentary assemblies of such republics often have little power to enact anything at odds with the central government in Moscow. Such limited autonomy is given as one of the primary reasons for successionist conflicts within the Federation, most notably the one in Chechnya.
