Anambra State, Nigeria



         


Anambra is a state in east-central Nigeria. It was created in 1976 from part of east-central state, and its capital was Enugu. This state, which is now known as Old Anambra state, was divided in 1991 into two states, Anambra and Enugu. The current capital of Anambra is Awka. Most of the population of Anambra are members of the Igbo ethnic group. Its governor since 2003 is Chris Ngige. There is much corruption in the state government, and the state has experienced political turmoil for the past several years, which included an attempted coup against the government in 2003.
