Africa (province)

Africa was a province of the Roman Empire. It comprised the territory of present-day northern Tunisia, as well as the Mediterranean coast of modern-day western Libya along the Syrtis Minor.

It was the site of the ancient city of Carthage, and was acquired as province of the Empire following the defeat of that city during the Third Punic War in the 2nd century BC.

The Arabs later named roughly the same region Ifriqiya, a rendering of "Africa".
