Acharnes (or Akharnes, Aharnes) is a suburb of Athens also known as Menidi.
In ancient times when it was the deme Acharnae, many of its residents were charcoal peddlers, a fact which is put to comic use by Aristophanes in his play The Acharnians. Today it is a working-class neighborhood.
On 7 September, 1999, it was very close to the epicenter of a devastating earthquake which resulted in significant destruction to Acharnes and the greater Athens area.
