  • 4, United States: The Sikorsky HH-60D Night Hawk helicopter makes its first flight.
  • 21, Paris: 14 hours and 2 minutes after taking off from New York, Air France pilot Patrick Fourticq and his companion, race driver Henry Pescarolo, land their Piper Malibu here, setting a world record for a trans-Atlantic flight by a single engined light aircraft.
• 29, Dallas: American Airlines sets an industry record by ordering 67 McDonnell Douglas MD-80 jets, with options to order 100 more in the future.

• 29, New York: TWA starts services to ten cities in one day, the largest single day expansion in the carrier's history.

  • 3, Florida: Air Florida suspends all their flights after going bankrupt.
  • 4, Dallas: The Bell model 400 Twin Ranger flies for the first time.
  • 23, Ontario, Canada: An Air Canada Boeing 767 runs out of fuel on its way from Montreal to Edmonton. Ground crew at the Montreal airport miscalculated the flight's length and did not put enough fuel in it. Pilot Robert Pearson, an amateur glider pilot, lands the plane safely at the locality of Gimli.

  • 16, Toulouse, France: ATR's ATR 42 plane makes its first flight.

  • 21, France: The Dassault-Breguet Mystere-Falcon 900 business jet makes its first flight.

  • 4, Florida: 61 year old Elaine Yadwin lands a Piper Cherokee Warrior II safely after her husband, the plane's pilot, dies during the flight.
  • 18, Palmdale, California: Rockwell's B-1B military airplane flies for the first time.
• November
  • 1, Ethiopia: British Airways and some other international airlines begin relief flights carrying food and supplies to the impoverished African country.

  • 7, Dallas: Southwest Airlines receives the first of the Boeing 737 series 300 airplanes.
  • 14, California: The Grumman X-29A type airplane makes its first flight.
  • 17, United States: A C-5 Galaxy of the USAF becomes airborne with 920,836 pounds in tow, setting a national record.
  • 17, Long Beach, California: McDonnell Douglas's latest variation of the DC-9, the MD-83, flies for the first time.
